SUMMARY:Ethics CLE: The Ethics of Self-Interest: How to Defend Yourself While Always Defending Your Client
DESCRIPTION:The Ethics of Self-Interest: How to Defend Yourself While Always Defending Your Client \nPresented by Lori Teicher\, First Assistant Federal Public Defender & JoNell Thomas\, Clark County Special Public Defender \nMarch 25 at noon via Zoom \nAs criminal defense attorneys\, we are expected to zealously defend our clients against all accusations of wrongdoing.  But what happens when our clients accuse us of wrongdoing?  How do we balance our natural inclination to defend ourselves against our obligation to always act in our client’s best interests? First Assistant Federal Public Defender Lori Teicher and Clark County Special Public Defender JoNell Thomas will discuss the ethical considerations relevant to responding to allegations of ineffective assistance of counsel and drafting motions to withdraw. \n  \nRegister in advance for this webinar: \nhttps://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_pfHESXxqSJirIDCCitiICw

SUMMARY:What’s Race Gotta Do with It? Litigating Fourth Amendment Claims
DESCRIPTION:Often times the government resorts to the convenient but-your-client-said-yes excuse to save an otherwise illegal search. Given changes in technology\, the media has unprecedented access to documented instances of sometimes aggressive police practices\, and then the general public has unfettered exposure to these recordings. We must now question whether officer-initiated contacts are ever consensual in this environment. Please join Juval Scott\, the Federal Defender for the Western District of Virginia\, to discuss framing Fourth Amendment challenges through a new lens in hopes of gaining true justice for the client. \n  \nRegister in advance for this webinar: \nhttps://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_1UF2Ca4sQ2uMavB8gV8B-Q \n  \nImportant information about registering: \nTo attend\, you must register in advance for each webinar using the links above. Upon registering you will receive a link unique to you\, which cannot be shared. You must use that link to attend the CLE and obtain credit. If you don’t\, you won’t appear on the attendance report Zoom generates and you won’t receive credit. You can connect to the audio by phone\, but you must also use your unique link to attend on your computer or other device. If you attend only by calling in\, you will not appear on the attendance report Zoom generates and you will not receive credit.

SUMMARY:Ethics in the Age of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Meeting with your client in-person is nearly impossible in the age of Covid-19.  What are your options for speaking confidentially with your client?  Is the government listening to your phone calls?  Is the video line really secure?  How do you speak with your client during a hearing if you are physically present in court to cross-examine live witnesses\, but your client is still in Pahrump.  In this CLE we will focus on the difficulties that arise when communicating with your clients confidentially in the age of Covid-19.  Please join us. This CLE provides 1 hour of ethics credit. \nPresented by Joanne Diamond and Paul Riddle\, Assistant Federal Public Defenders \nRegister in advance for this meeting: \nhttps://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_wC8lf4tGTKmf8xP5TrvQwQ \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Attorney Wellness During the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:When the Supreme Court established the right to counsel in Gideon v. Wainwright\, it recognized that lawyers “are necessities\, not luxuries.”  In our necessary roles\, the well-being of defense attorneys is even more critical in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.  The stress for defense lawyers has been compounded during this crisis\, as we represent clients confined in prisons\, separated from loved ones\, in facilities where the risk of infection is exponentially greater.  The stress response evolved to help humans escape from predators\, and the rest-and-digest system curbs the stress response\, calming the body and brain.  Long-term elevated levels of stress can cause psychological problems such as irritability\, anxiety\, panic attacks\, and depression; and physical effects including increased blood pressure\, heart palpitations\, breathlessness\, dizziness\, chest pain\, digestive problems\, muscle tension\, and impaired immune response.  Practices that strengthen the rest-and-digest system can mitigate the stress response.  In this webinar\, Dr. Debra Austin will provide suggested practices to reduce stress and enhance cognitive effectiveness\, well-being\, and performance. This webinar will also address the physical and emotional domains of well-being referenced in the American Bar Association’s report on The Path to Lawyer Well-Being: Practical Recommendations for Positive Change. \nPresenter: \nDebra Austin\, JD\, PhD\, Professor of the Practice\, University of Denver Sturm College of Law\, Denver\, CO. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ZPAq5EP5RQ2hFjq_HmA8WQ \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nMaterials: \n\nAttorney Wellness During the Pandemic NV – Debra Austin\nAttorney Wellness During Pandemic Assessments – NV – Debra Austin\nAttorney Wellness During Pandemic Handout – NV – Debra Austin
